Google Webmaster Tools is the primary mechanism for Google to communicate with webmasters and helps alert you about issues with your site. This guide will walk you through the various GWT features, and what actionable data can be found within.
- GOOGLE WEBMASTER TOOLS
Google Webmaster Tools (GWT) is the primary mechanism for Google to communicate with webmasters. Google Webmaster Tools helps you to identify issues with your site and can even let you know if it has been infected with malware (not something you ever want to see, but if you haven’t spotted it yourself, or had one of your users tweet at you to let you know, it’s invaluable).
Before you can access any data on your site, you have to prove that you’re an authorized representative of the site. This is done through a process of verification.
There are five main methods of verification currently in place for GWT. There’s no real preference as to which method you use, although the first two tend to be the most commonly used as they’ve been around for longer.
The HTML file upload. Google provides you with a blank, specially named file that you just have to drop in the root directory of your site. Once you’ve done that, you just click on the verify button and you’ll have access to your GWT data for this site.
- HTML tag
Clicking on this option will provide you with a metatag that you can insert into the head of your home page. Once it’s there, click on the verify button to view your GWT data. One item to note about using this method of verification is that it’s possible for the tag to be accidentally removed during an update to the home page, which would lead to a revocation of the verification, but reinserting the tag and clicking verify again will fix that.

Select your Domain Name provider from the drop-down list and Google will give you a step-by-step guide for verification along with a unique security token for you to use.
- Google Analytics
If the Google account you’re using for GWT is the same account as for GA (assuming you’re using GA as your analytics solution), is an admin on the GA account, and you’re using the asynchronous tracking code (with the code being in the head of your home page), then you can verify the site this way.

There may be messages that inform you that you have pages infected with malware, that they’ve detected a large number of pages on your site, which may be an indication of other problems or even just an informational message that your WordPress installation really needs to be updated to remove the possibility of anyone exploiting already known security holes in that platform.

There are many ways to monetize your website traffic, and most of them are related to advertising third-party products or services to your website visitors. There are many advertising programs that can help you earn money nowadays, but the most popular is Google AdSense.
This advertising program was launched in mid2003 by Google and is currently the most popular advertising program on the Internet. It provides a good opportunity for webmasters and site owners to monetize their traffic – every year, Google pays over $10 billion to its publishers.
- ADVANTAGES OF GOOGLE ADSENSE
- High level of security, safety and transparency for both advertisers and publishers. This is another good feature of AdSense. Google acts as an intermediary between the two sides and is mindful of the whole process being transparent and clear for everyone. All the necessary metrics can be tracked within your Google Analytics account.
- Variety of ad formats. In AdSense, advertisers can run text, images, HTML ads, video ads and much more, and in many different sizes. As a publisher, you can experiment with different ad types and figure out which ones drive the most revenue.
- WORKING OF GOOGLE ADSENSE
The whole process is quite simple. You create an AdSense account, insert a small amount of code into your website pages – and that’s all you need to start. Google will display targeted ads on your page that are either relevant to the content of your website or to users’ previous searches, based on its proprietary algorithms.
- HOW TO MAKE MONEY WITH IT?
Your website visitors will start clicking those ads and – the best part – you will be paid for it. Google AdSense works on a cost-per-click and revenue-sharing basis. This means that your main task will be to provide as many clicks to those ads as possible.
Google charges advertisers per ad click. Publishers get 68% of the click amount (or 51% when it comes to AdSense for search).
The commission you get depends heavily on the competition and CPC in the niche. In practice, the commission per click can range from $0.20 to $15. The majority of niches bring less than $3 per click to publishers. However, there are some niches that can be extremely profitable.
- There are two ways to discover the most profitable topics:
- Estimate an average cost per click in the niche with the CPC Map tool: Insurance, Online Education and Marketing & Advertising. If a blog is about to start and choosing the topics to cover, these numbers will be extremely useful.
- Check the CPC of a particular keyword in the Keyword Magic tool:

This tool is powered by the biggest keyword database in the world (over 14.6 billion keywords as of August 2019). You can just enter a seed keyword (“AdSense”, for example) and it will give you tons of related search terms with CPC, search volume and competition level for each of these terms.
- Traffic Is the King
Finally, and most importantly, earnings also depend on the amount of targeted traffic to your website. One can choose the most expensive niche and pick the best placements for ads, but it doesn’t make sense if nobody comes to website or blog. Keeping in mind that only a very small number of visitors will click the ads (there are no official statistics from Google, but usually webmasters report that 1% to 2% is quite a good CTR). Most probably, the clicks will bring less than $1 per click. Now one can calculate how much traffic is needed to earn the amount you want. Therefore, to make money with AdSense, a large volumes of traffic is needed. This will require a lot of work and a lot of unique and quality content.
Most Common WordPress Problems and Their Solutions
WordPress is stable software and operates without issues most of the time. However, at times, things may go a little haywire, and your WP website can refuse to function normally.
Have you ever encountered a white screen after adding some new themes or plugins? Maybe you were just updating your WordPress website and that update now refuses to finish, and your website is in eternal maintenance mode? What about internal server and database connection errors?
500 Internal Server Error
Your site was working fine, and then, when you wake up the next day, this is what you find: 500 INTERNAL SERVER ERROR
The most common cause of a 500 Internal Server Error message is a corrupt .htaccess file. Additional causes can be a conflicting plugin or theme, or even a corrupt WordPress installation.
Sometimes, PHP memory limits may also cause a 500 Internal Server Error. The easiest way to figure out where the problem lies is to check your website’s error_log (many shared web hosts often do not enable full error logging, though). To find out more, you can enable WP_DEBUG and check for error logs. Open up your wp-config.php file, and locate the following line of code:
And change it to:
Since the most likely cause behind the error is a corrupt .htaccess file, let us tackle this one first.
You will need FTP access on your server. Navigate to the root directory of your WordPress installation, and locate the file. Rename the file to, let us say, something like
Now reload your website. If it works, congratulations! You can now generate a new .htaccess file simply by navigating to Settings>Permalinks in your WP admin panel and re-saving the settings.
You can also try deactivating your plugins and themes because sometimes a 500 Internal Server Error can be caused by a faulty plugin or theme as well. Alternatively, you can try increasing your PHP Memory Limit to ensure that the memory limit is not the cause of the error. You can find detailed instructions regarding memory limits on the WordPress Codex.
If all else fails, you will need to grab a fresh copy of WordPress from the official site, and then re-upload the
White Screen of Death
As the name suggests, a White Screen of Death means when you access your website, you see nothing but a blank page.
There can be multiple reasons behind a WSOD, the most common ones being compatibility issues with a plugin or a theme. Of course, the “incompatibility” itself can have multiple faces: a plugin may have a conflict with another plugin, or a plugin may not be compatible with the latest version of WP. Similarly, a theme may also experience compatibility issues with WordPress after an update.
The easiest solution is to first isolate your plugins’ directory. To do so, navigate to the root of your WP installation via FTP (assuming you cannot, at all, access your website and all you get is a WSOD), and then head to /wp-content. Locate the folder named “plugins” and rename it (let us say, “plugins_old”). Create a new folder named “plugins”.
This will isolate all your plugins, and if your website works fine, then yes, one of your plugins is at fault. Do not open your plugins page at this point, else you may end up deactivating all your plugins.
Once you have verified that one of the plugins is behind the WSOD, you can copy individual plugin files from “plugins_old” to plugins”, one by one, to check which one is causing the WSOD.
For themes, the procedure is even simpler. Navigate to /wp-content/themes, and then rename the folder of the active theme. Next, open up your WP admin panel, and head to the Themes page. This will cause WP to fall-back to the default theme (Twenty “something”, depending on your WP installation version).
If you have a tool like WP Reset installed, the solution is even more straightforward. Just load the Emergency Recovery Script (a part of the plugin that works autonomously), and turn off the plugins & themes until you find the one that caused obstacles. Once you get to log back into your site, you will have a restore point (snapshot) ready. So, all you need is a few seconds to restore it and it will undo changes to your website caused by the bad update.
Maintenance Mode Error
This error: BRIEFLY UNAVAILABLE FOR SCHEDULED MAINTENANCE. CHECK BACK IN A MINUTE
Each time you update WordPress to a newer version, it makes a temporary .maintenance file. The problem occurs when the .maintenance file is not removed properly after the upgrade (in many cases, this happens when the upgrade process itself fails to complete successfully).
You will need to login to your WP root directory via FTP. Once you’ve logged in, locate the .maintenance file and delete it. This will resolve the error.
Error Establishing A Database Connection
This Error: ERROR ESTABLISHING A DATABASE CONNECTION
If you get the above error when you try to access your website, it means WordPress is experiencing a problem when trying to access the database.
The direct cause can be an issue with the
wp-config.php file — most likely, details related to your database have been entered incorrectly.
However, most of the time, database connection errors occur due to a problem that can be solved only by your web host (especially if you are on a shared hosting server). Most shared web hosting providers keep limits on databases, and if your database crosses the allotted quota, you can receive a connection error. Plus, database connection errors also occur if your web server is down.
Lastly, sometimes a hacked website can also result in database connection issues.
First up, the wp-config.php file. Locate the file using FTP, and open it. You can then go through it to ensure that database details are correct (database name, username, password, and database host).
If you think your website has been hacked or compromised, you will have to work towards cleaning it up. You can use Sucuri SiteCheck to ensure that your website is clean.
Lastly, if your web server is down or if your database has reached the allotted quota, you will obviously need to get in touch with your web hosting provider.
Connection Timed Out
An error that you receive from an overloaded server (or a badly configured server).
It generally happens when the web site’s server is too overloaded and is unable to complete your browser’s request. Nothing puts it more eloquently than the WordPress Codex:
The Connection Timed Out error appears when your website is trying to do more than your server can manage.
The first step is to deactivate your plugins. If this cures the problem, try re-activating them one by one to see which plugin is causing the issue. Alternatively, if it is a problem related to your current theme, activate the default WP theme.
You can also increase your PHP memory limit using the wp-config.php file. Open the file, and add the following line of code to it:
This will increase the memory limit to 64 MB. You should note, however, that if you are on a shared web host, you may not be allowed to increase your memory limit beyond a certain point. In this case, you will need to contact your web host to increase the memory limit for you. Also, bear in mind that many shared hosting providers keep the PHP memory limit as low as 8 MB.
Lastly, if you have access to your php.ini file, you can also consider increasing the maximum execution time.
You get a message like “MySQL error code 145.”
Error 145 means that your WordPress database is damaged or corrupted.
The easiest way to repair your WP database is using phpMyAdmin.
Once you login to phpMyAdmin, choose your WP database. You will then need to select the checkboxes next to the tables that you wish to repair. Once selected, you can choose the “Repair Table” option from the drop-down menu right below the list of tables.
Note: Always create a backup of your database before making changes to it.
Error 28 is more of a MySQL error and is not related to WordPress. Even Drupal, Joomla! or other CMS’ websites can experience it.
Error 28 can occur if the cache on your web server is full or if you have too many files in your /tmp directory.
If you can, then try to empty your /tmp directory. Alternatively, you should contact your web host to help you resolve the cache related issues.
Warning: Cannot Modify Header Information — Headers Already Sent
Sometimes, you may encounter an error that goes along the lines of:
"Warning: Cannot modify header information -- headers already sent by (output started at /path-to-something-directory/some-config-file:xyz )".
This error is caused by the unrequired spaces in the mentioned WordPress file (generally, it is the
wp-config.php file). Naturally, you will need to edit the concerned file to remove the unnecessary whitespaces.
Download the file that is mentioned in the error (say, wp-config.php). Open it using an editor of your choice, and then ensure that there are no spaces either before
<?php or after
?> tags. Overall, the first letters of the file should be
<?php and the last letters should be
?> (with absolutely no spaces between ‘?’ and ‘<’ or ‘>’ either).
As already mentioned, most of the time this error happens due to spaces in the wp-config.php file. It can be some other file too, though — just read the error carefully because it specifies the file name and the path to the concerned file.
An error such as this one:
Warning: file_get_contents (http://www.url.com/url) [function:file-get-contents]: failed to open stream on line xyz
Most of the time, such errors occur because your web host has strict security settings in the PHP configuration (“security” not as in to prevent hacks, but to prevent overuse of server resources, etc.).
If you have access to the
php.ini file, you can resolve the error yourself. Open the file, and locate the following line:
allow_url_fopen = Off
Now change the “off” value to “on”, as follows:
allow_url_fopen = On
If you do not have access to your php.ini file, you will need to contact your web hosting provider and ask them to enable
allow_url_fopen. Also, if this error is followed by a message such as “failed to open stream: no such file or directory in…”, it can mean that the mentioned file is either missing or not readable (look for it in the specified path, and if you find it, check its file permissions).

This covers a wide range of tips in itself, but finding the right hosting provider for your WordPress site is absolutely essential for success. Without hosting, your site can’t go live on the internet.
That’s not the only reason it’s important. Your hosting provider needs to give you enough resources to handle your site traffic, avoid crashes and downtime as much as possible, and give you fast site speeds.
First, you need to find the right hosting plan for your site – there are several different types, with different levels of features. Watch Theme Demos
When you’re choosing your theme, it’s a good idea to make use of theme demos. This way, you can view a theme – and sometimes even try it out – before committing to it.
Your theme forms the basis of your website’s design, so it’s important to choose one that you like, that suits your project, and that you will actually enjoy using. Yes, you can customize WordPress, but unless you’re skilled in coding or are working with a developer, it’s sensible to start out with a suitable theme.
Simply find a theme you like the look of, click “View Demo” or “Live Demo,” and you can see how it would look online. If you like the theme and decide to import it, you can then edit the demo content to make the theme truly your own!
Install an SEO Plugin
SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is critical for the success of any website. Without SEO, your site won’t rank highly in the search results – not ideal for growing your audience! Unless you’re a real tech pro, and perhaps even then, you’ll probably need a helping hand with your SEO.

Install Google Analytics
Google Analytics is a well-known tool for tracking performance, recording data and giving insight into how people are interacting with your site. This makes it an invaluable tool for measuring your site’s success.
The best (and easiest) way to install Google Analytics is with the plugin MonsterInsights. Both Google Analytics and MonsterInsights come with free versions. You’ll need the tracking code given to you when you create your Google Analytics account, and MonsterInsights will guide you through the installation process.
Installing Google Analytics lets you view your data straight from your WordPress dashboard, meaning you get eyes on how many people are visiting your site, how long they stay on your site, and much more. With Google Analytics, all that juicy information is at your fingertips.
Pick Your Theme Carefully
There are tons of themes available for you to choose from, and it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the quantity. Our top tip is to be picky and only look at quality themes.
Always read the reviews, pick one that suits your project, and don’t be afraid to pay for a premium theme. It’s essential you pick a mobile-responsive theme – if you don’t, you’ll run into problems with Google down the line, and give your mobile users a poor online experience
Some themes come pre-packed with features. While this might be appealing, be careful – these themes can really slow your site speeds down, which is a big issue you really want to avoid. Be picky, be minimal, and in the end you should be happy with your theme. If not, don’t worry – you can easily switch later!
Compress Your Images
Compressing an image reduces the file size, helping your site run faster and saving you precious storage space.
Fast site speed is like the holy grail of running a website. Speeding up your loading times can breathe new life into otherwise dead pages, and both visitors and search engines love a fast-loading site. That’s why you must always compress your images and videos.
There are loads of online tools where you can compress your images for free, such as Kraken.io, ImageResize, and Optimizilla. All you do is upload the images you want to compress, then download the final versions once they’ve been optimized. It’s quick, easy, and you don’t even need to download any software.
Limit Your Plugins
Plugins add functionality to your website. Unless your theme comes with built-in features, you’ll need plugins to add features like contact forms, newsletters, or live chats to your site. However, having too many plugins can slow your site down, and even put your site’s security at risk.
Only install plugins you really need, which will benefit your users and your website – don’t give into the temptation of picking as many cool ones as you can find. The extra code plugins bring can weigh your site down, slowing its loading speeds.
Because plugins can be created by anyone, there’s a lot of choices and varying levels of quality. Plugins are officially reviewed for security, but not for quality, so it’s always best to read user reviews as well.
Set Up Your Gravatar
Gravatar? What’s that?
Gravatar stands for Globally Recognized Avatar. It’s a service that integrates with WordPress to basically provide the user picture attached to your account.
Having a personalized, unique picture like this helps people to recognize you, and gives you a clear identity across different websites. When you post, your Gravatar image will appear with your author bio; when you leave a comment, your Gravatar picture will sit next to it.
Gravatar is already integrated with WordPress – you just need to go to your Profile section in WordPress and scroll down to the Profile Picture section. Click on the link to Gravatar – once on the Gravatar site, you can upload whichever image you want to use, and link it to the email you registered your WordPress account with. This will pull the image into your WordPress account.
You’ve probably heard of the famed WordPress updates, but what are they really all about? WordPress updates its software regularly to keep its platform secure. Minor updates occur around every two weeks, while major updates happen roughly once a month.
You don’t need to worry too much over those minor updates – that’s just WordPress making tweaks and fixing little bugs. But you should check for updates regularly, to make sure you haven’t missed anything new – otherwise, your site can become outdated and vulnerable to nasty bugs.
Simply go to your WordPress dashboard, where it’ll tell you if you need to update your plugins, themes, or version of WordPress. There’ll be handy “update now” buttons to keep things nice and easy.
Always make sure to backup your site before updating, and again after you’ve finished.
Manage Your Comments
Comments are a great way for your readers to interact with you and your content, and can create a real community on your site. You can manage your comments through your WordPress admin.
You might not want to enable comments for some pages, or for others, you might want to moderate which comments get published on-site. Google actually crawls comments as well as your content, so it’s worth avoiding spam comments.
To manage your comments, simply go to your Settings, find the Discussion section, and select the options you’d like.
Keep Your Content Clutter Free
It can be easy to get carried away with all the fancy widgets, banners, ads, and more that you can put on your site. But while it might be fun for you, it’s not so fun for your readers.
Cluttering up your site can distract from your content – or even worse, make people reluctant to stay on the page at all. Take a look through your sidebar and footer, and make sure that any widgets are contributing to the page – usually, less is more!
Edit Your WordPress Permalinks
Permalinks are simply permanent links (get it?), such as the address of your website, or the addresses of your individual blog posts. WordPress automatically creates permalinks when you create a new post, but the default settings are clunky, and not very SEO friendly.
